Account books, 1802-1837.

Consists of two volumes, both used by Bastian and Strouss to record financial transactions from 1802 to 1837. Entries pertaining to Bastian document his activities as a dyer and offer references to household items exchanged and purchased. Many of his accounts were with Christian Seltzer and Peter Ranck. The Strousses noted such wood working activities as sawing, laying floors, repairing sleighs, working at a boat yard, and making bedsteads, coffins, etc. References are made to boards, shingles, and cherry planks.

Friedrich Bastian was a Pennsylvania German dyer. In 1804 he moved from Jonestown in Lebanon County, Pa. to Middletown in Dauphin County, Pa. Peter Ranck was a joiner, cabinetmaker, and innkeeper from Jonestown, Lebanon County, PA. Born in 1770, Peter was the eighth of eleven children born to John Philip, Jr. and Magdelena Ranck. After his father died in 1784, Peter and his older brother, John, decided not to continue the family occupation of farming and took up the trade of joinery with an unidentified local craftsman.
